Songcraft, Emotion & a Hit Song
By: Ty Cohen

There is something that is intrinsically special about writing songs. Writing a song and making it a hit is even more special. Sometimes we get so caught up in the whole technical act of writing a song and figuring out what order to do it in, that we lose the whole meaning behind it. Learning how to write a hit song can be a wonderful experience if we just stop worrying and let it happen.

It is true, there is something called songcraft, that as a songwriter, you must know a little about. Your songcraft is defined as the art of making songs or verse. No matter what genre of music you write for, you must have some working knowledge of songcraft. Songcraft includes picking a title and writing lyrics, along with understanding melody, chords and rhythm.

The wonderful thing about writing songs is that you don’t have to be an incredible music composer, you just need familiarity with the above skills and some emotion. Is that it, you ask? Yes, that is it! Unfortunately you can’t have one and not the either, they work hand in hand.

Where do I begin? is probably your next question. Let’s first come up with a title. A title is most crucial because it tells a mini story about your song. Can’t You See, Candle in the Wind, Smells Like Teen Spirit, or Eine Kleine Nachtmusik,(a little night music) it doesn’t matter, as long as it describes the emotion or story you want your listeners to experience.

Now you can brainstorm. Sit down somewhere quiet, either alone, or with your instrument and make a list of emotions that you want to express. Go deeper than happy or sad; go with an emotion that stems from a life event. Remember, your title is the attention grabber for your song so always begin with that.

If you are having trouble coming up with a title on your own due to writer’s block then try reading. Read through your morning newspaper, watch the news, read a magazine. You are bound to find keywords or ideas that jump out at you or strike an emotion of some sort. Inspiration for a songwriter or music composer can stem from anywhere and sometimes you have to search for it.

Discovering how to write a hit song can be an enriching process. As you can see, all you have to do is begin with an understanding of songcraft and mix it up with some of emotion, which everyone has, and you will be on your way to writing that hit song you have always dreamed of. Remember not to get so worked up over every aspect and detail involved in songwriting. If you sit back and relax, then learning how to write a hit song will be a cinch.
